When stepping through the gate of an older building, one is often struck by how much the architectural expression has been allowed to take center stage in the entrance and stairwell. A space that in modern buildings is often overlooked and given a subordinate role. Around the turn of the century, the stairwell had a central function as a welcoming hall, and it was also a place to showcase the residents' social status.
