The staircase is often a prominent feature of the home and can have a big impact on creating a welcoming hallway and a positive first impression. Refurbishing or replacing an existing balustrade is a rewarding renovation project that doesn’t necessarily require a lot of time. It also offers the opportunity to create something truly unique, thanks to the almost endless combination possibilities. Choose from a variety of turned posts, handrails and finials. For indoor use we recommend pine, and for outdoor use spruce – all supplied untreated. The spacing between posts is largely a matter of personal preference, but do make sure the spindles are positioned close enough to prevent small children from slipping through. According to Swedish building regulations (Boverket), the gap between spindles/posts should not exceed 100 mm to ensure child safety.
As a general guideline, we recommend the following spacing:
Posts
40 mm posts: 9–10 per metre
65 mm posts: 7 per metre
85 mm posts: 5 per metre
The balustrade pictured consists of a curved handrail, grooved spindles, and a base rail. As a finishing touch, a more substantial chamfered post has been chosen, paired with a post cap!
