- We spent a lot of time finding the right balance between width, height, and thickness for the studs, shelves, moldings, and baseboards. Then, once we had made these choices, we spent even more time on measurements and planning to adapt to our sloped ceilings and walls. Taking the time to double-check every measurement, consider the order in which the pieces would be placed, and avoiding shortcuts made a significant difference in how well the bookshelf turned out in the end.

We dedicated many hours to searching for inspiration to truly settle on both the design and construction. We realized how significant and essential decorative elements of various kinds were for the final finish. We truly found everything we desired at Sekelskifte. For the bookshelf, we chose crown moldings, brackets, decorative plaster elements, and a substantial baseboard.

Our original plan was to build the shelf around the double doors on one side of the wall, but the significant difference in ceiling height between the right and left sides of the wall made that solution unworkable. Since we wanted to build the shelf all the way up to the ceiling, we realized that the double doors needed some assistance to match the height of the shelf and not appear slender. We found the perfect solution at Sekelskifte in the form of a crown molding for the door. It also had a design that echoed the crown molding of the bookshelf, tying them together in a very elegant manner. Due to the sloped ceiling, we couldn't attach the ceiling molding directly to the shelf, so we opted for a straight crown molding with a backing panel instead.

The goal we truly wanted to achieve with the shelf was GRAND. It was meant to occupy the space in the room that features high ceilings, double doors, panels, a tiled stove, and wide planks in both the floor and ceiling. Additionally, we were planning to incorporate water pipes in one corner.

The principle of the construction, given our circumstances, was to have a frame with studs at the floor, ceiling, and for five rows of shelves. We then clad these five studs with plywood, installed real shelves with milled edges, and attached moldings with milled decorative lines to the front of the five studs. After that, we mounted crown moldings, glued decorative elements, and added a floor skirting board at the bottom. Additionally, the side of the shelf received mirrors made of thin moldings to add some extra flair. It was so rewarding to see it come together step by step, and the magical feeling when the final touch was applied, and the entire bookshelf stood ready in front of us, ready to be filled with beloved books!
