Facts & Info - Cleaning instructions for Winckelmans tiles

Winckelmans tiles are not only durable and weather-resistant enough for both indoor and outdoor use, they also maintain their beautiful colors for many years. By following a few simple steps, you can ensure your floor keeps its elegant look year after year.

1. Cleaning After Grouting

After installation, once the excess grout has been wiped off, a thin white cement film may remain on the tiles. Removing this residue usually requires both an acid-based cleaner and some mechanical action.

How to do it:
- Rub the surface with a sponge to remove most of the film.
- Wet the grout lines with water.
- Apply the acid-based cleaner to one section at a time and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Scrub off the remaining film.
- Rinse thoroughly with water (repeat if needed).

Recommended products: Acid-based cleaner designed for unglazed tiles.

2. Apply a Stain-Resistant Treatment

Due to their high density, the tiles absorb very little water and generally do not require sealing. However, we recommend applying a stain-resistant treatment in high-use areas such as around showers or kitchen counters to prevent grease or hygiene products from penetrating the pores. This should be done one to two weeks after installation, on clean and dry tiles. The appearance of the tiles will not be altered by the treatment.

Recommended products: Sealer for unglazed tiles, such as Impregnation - Fila MP90 Eco Xtreme 1L.

3. Regular Maintenance

Regular cleaning will help preserve the tiles’ original appearance. The choice of cleaning agent and water quality matters (soft water is preferred). In general, linseed oil–based products should not be used. Because of the tiles’ high density, fatty residues from these products remain on the surface and attract dirt.

Recommended products: All-Purpose Cleaner - Fila Cleaner Pro 1L or another mild alkaline cleaner.
Avoid: Linseed oil–based products. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) and its derivatives should never be used, as they can damage the floor.
