Our Norwegian Footprint
Norway has long been an important part of Sekelskifte’s journey. Early on, we discovered that the interest in period appropriate details, historic preservation, and traditional architecture extended far beyond Sweden’s borders. Today, Norway is our largest market after Sweden, and Norwegian was the first language we translated our website into after Swedish and English.
There is also a personal connection: the founder of Sekelskifte is one quarter Norwegian, so the ties to Norway have always been there. With our upcoming store, we want to be closer to the customers who have followed us for many years and create an environment where historic details, materials, and craftsmanship can be experienced in person.
Sagene is one of Oslo’s best preserved industrial districts, shaped along the Akerselva River during the industrial breakthrough of the 19th century. Our premises at Maridalsveien 87 were once part of this history as a former textile mill housed in a distinctive brick building, whose operations were powered by the waterfall rushing outside the windows, a sight and sound that remains to this day.
During the second half of the 19th century, a dense network of factories, workshops, and workers’ housing was established along the Akerselva, shaping the character of the district ever since. We were looking for a location with historic roots, genuine period character, and a central position in Oslo. When we stepped into the old factory building, with its brick walls, high ceilings, and the waterfall rushing just outside, we knew we had found where we belonged.
In our bright Art Nouveau section, you can take your time exploring wood products, color samples, hardware, and wallpaper until you find the combination you like best.
At the rustic checkout counter, painted in dark linseed oil paint and inspired by the National Romantic style, you can get help, tips, and advice on historic preservation, architectural styles, and restoration.
Further into the store, you will find the bathroom department with wall tile and floor tile, where there are both completed examples and the opportunity to create your own combination of materials and colors. Here, the interior design and material choices reflect the spirit of the 1920s.
